Trupanion is a pet insurance provider based in Seattle, Washington, that offers and administers cat and dog insurance in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Puerto Rico. Trupanion is self-underwritten by the American Pet Insurance Company (APIC). Trupanion was founded by current CEO Darryl Rawlings as Vetinsurance in Canada in 1999. In 2005, the company expanded into the United States and became the first North American pet insurance provider to become licensed to provide its own underwriting.

I signed a contract with Trupanion for pet insurance. Two months later they emailed and said that due to an error on THEIR end WE owe more money every month. I explained that we had a signed contract. They absolutely refused to honor it.

We had a very poor experience with Trupanion.

Through our interaction with them it became very apparent they were working extremely hard to avoid covering costs.

We have a 2 1/2 month old puppy who we took to the vet a few days after receiving him. He ingested a foreign body and they somehow managed to deem this a preexisting condition. Completely baffled us how they came to that conclusion.

Not only did they not cover any costs whatsoever, but now that ingesting a foreign body is deemedva preexisting condition our brand new puppy is no longer covered for ingesting foreign items for the rest of his life.

I don’t know of another provider to recommend, but I do suggest you take great caution before relying on Trupanion to support you and your pets.
