Absolutely unacceptable behavior for a company owned and operated by AIG, the worlds largest insurance concern! I purchased a season pass insurance from Travel Guard at the Buck Hill ski resort, in Burnsville, MN, hoping to cover the cost of the pass in case of an accident during the term of the pass. In Jan. 2016 I was hit by a novice skier who crashed in my back at a very high speed, ending my ski season with 3 broken ribs. I duly filed a claim, submitting all required documentation. But for months I didn’t get my claim worked on and hearing nothing but delays, excuses, etc. Then Travel Guard blamed the ski resort for not getting the right info. After that was taken care of, Travel Guard has now requested that I submit once again all of the info I had previously provided – not only including the payment receipt for the premium payment, but even a copy of my bank’s credit card statement…. are they for real? It is now almost September and Travel Guard continues to delay and postpone their contractual obligations, which behavior appears to be by design, based on the reports of other clients.

They do everything possible to not fulfil a claim. From requesting information they already haven from the policy purchase, to not allowing a partial claim to be saved, to limits on attachment size that makes it impossible to give them the form required. I have now spent 50 minutes (20 and 30) and once again will have to start over tomorrow as it won’t accept jpeg only pdf on one of the forms. I bought travel insurance to AVOID headaches, not get one

I have used Travel Guard on most of my travels. I have had to make a claim on one occasion. They were great! I think the problem people incounter is they expect they will cover anything and everything. People need to educate themselves before purchasing any insurance product. Travel Guard has representatives to answer ANY questions the consumer may have. Great company with a great product but again the consumer just like with anything educating yourself will save you much frustration.

What does “100% Cancellation Trip Cost” mean to you?

We believe that the average person would interpret that phrase to mean that if one cancels one’s trip they will get the cost refunded. After all, we did pay over $150 for our trip insurance. Unfortunately, it turns out those words have another meaning altogether.

Back in early June we contacted AIG because we had been directed by my wife’s doctor to not travel. My wife is having an abnormal pregnancy. At that time, AIG directed us to cancel our trip so that we could file a claim. No indication was given at that time that we would have any problems when filing the claim. So, as requested, we cancelled our trip and submitted the claim on 6/3. On 6/18 we received a response stating that confirmation from our doctor was needed to complete the claim. The form was returned on 6/20. We waited an additional 2 weeks until a response was given on 7/5 that the claim was denied. As of 7/25 we have contacted our claims adjuster on 2 additional occasions to dispute the finding but have not received a response.

Here are some details we would like the public to know before purchasing these policies:

First, as indicated above, we believe the policy was misrepresented when we purchased it. The exact verbiage from AIG is “TRIP CANCELLATION

100% Trip Cost”.

Second, the policy does exclude normal pregnancies. However, they denied our claim despite the pregnancy not being a normal pregnancy. The exclusion reads: “This plan does not cover any loss caused by or resulting from: Normal Pregnancy or Childbirth, other than Unforeseen

Complications of Pregnancy, or elective abortion of the Insured;”. Some examples of what makes this pregnancy abnormal include: bed rest, travel restrictions, and cesarean section. This is our 3rd pregnancy and our doctor has never required bed rest for any of the other pregnancies. Nor has our doctor denied our request to travel in any of our other pregnancies. Also, none of our other pregnancies have resulted in a non-elective cesarean section. All of these complications have been stressful enough without AIG telling us it’s a normal pregnancy. The most disturbing thing is that an insurance company will not accept the written recommendation of a doctor.

Lastly, if we had traveled despite our physicians request our policy would have been void. As per section K of the Exclusions and Limitations- General Exclusions section “any Trip taken outside the advice of a Physician” would cause an exclusion of the claim. Therefore, the exclusion section of the policy actually creates a catch-22 for our family. If we accept AIG’s assertion, that this is a “normal pregnancy”, and travel our policy would be void because we would be ignoring the advice of our doctor. And yet, we took the advice of our doctor and our claim is still denied. This is unethical.

We believe one of two things is happening. Either AIG is failing to act in good faith to distribute settlement when liability is clear or they are not actually offering trip cancellation insurance and perpetrating a scam. Either way, we want the public to know about these practices before seeking coverage for their next trip.

NEVER PURCHASE INSURANCE THROUGH THIS COMPANY. ITS FRAUDULENT. I purchased travel insurance through AIG to cover a flight to West Palm beach for a competition I was attending. Dorian the hurricane hit and the airport was closed and my competition canceled. I have been fighting to be refunded for almost two months now. The last email I received from then was them asking me to prove that the area was uninhabitable. The customer service is extremely poor. One lady I spoke with continued to cut me off midsentence and tell me that I needed to resend my claim and there was nothing she could do then she hung up on me.

AIG Leaves Man with Cancer going Hungry

Holiday insurance company AIG is recommended by Expedia and American Airlines and I booked cover for a holiday to Canada that was cancelled when my partner was diagnosed with cancer weeks prior to the trip.

In every communication with the company while providing the requested documentation I informed them that we no longer lived in the UK but now resided in France. Unlike many reviews I have read since dealing with the company, they agreed to pay out. BUT, that was over a month ago. 1st they sent the cheque to the old address in the UK that they had been informed many times was no longer valid. They took a week to respond to the email regarding that. They agreed to organise a wire transfer and the relevant proof of bank account was sent in, they took a week to acknowledge receipt and another to have, what was basically a page with numbers, translated.

It is now another week later, so just over a month since they agreed to pay out and despite the appalling handling of my claim and the knowledge now that my partner is not getting better, that we have no income due to Covid, bank payments are not being honoured, we are down to one meagre meal a day, that now, due to the stress of it all I am getting ill they still won’t prioritise my payment. In fact they have told me it will be another 2 to 3 weeks to process my wire transfer, which is just disgustingly unbelievable in this automated 21st century world!

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! From other reviews they rarely pay out and in my case, even when they say they will, they have the most archaic system that creates delay mixed with incompetence enabling them to hold on to YOUR money till the very last minute.

I repeat, save yourself the stress, do some research and book your holiday insurance with someone else. DO NOT, DO NOT USE AIG.

Simply Put, not worth the investment. This was my first purchase of travel insurance, and my flight was cancelled due to COVID 19, rerouted, then rescheduled and then cancelled, but no reason to worry, I bought travel insurance. The first mistake was trusting Travel Guard, a claim was filed three months ago, and the only response I have received to date is an automated reply that we are delayed due to COVID. I would like to offer that response to my patients, due to COVUD we just won’t answer your question, or respond to your email and better yet, if you call we will simply place you on hold for an hour or two. Travel Guard is owed by AIG, which had a 4th quarter profit for 2019 of 900 million plus, now we know how, they just refuse to adjudicate claims, and and simply play the waiting game. The airlines have actually been better, and that is saying a lot.

I purchased travel insurance. I got sick on my trip. They denied me coverage even though I had coverage then told me to get a doctor’s note stating how it related to my sickness and are still trying to deny any coverage even though my doctor specifically said in a letter the 2 were directly related and are still trying to deny paying my medical bills! I would rate a 0 out of a 10 and we’ll never purchase again! I would highly never recommend buying insurance from this company of any kind!!!!!!!

Mr. Anderson

Covid pandemic cancelled our trip. Flights, cruise and one hotel full refund. No questions asked. Another hotel refused $400 refund. This insurance agency did not help. Should have known better after seeing their reviews. Lesson learned. Never buy insurance from AIG.

I purchased a travel policy pre-Covid 19. Both the tour operator and airline cancelled the trip recently, so I requested a premium refund but was denied, only given a voucher for future use. Given that I have no idea if I’ll be able to book another trip, that is unacceptable, it should be a full refund; they never insured anything as the trip is not happening.

UPDATE 7/4/2020: I am rating Travel Guard up to 3 stars from 1. I pushed back in an email to them, demanding a full refund, and after several days they replied telling me they were issuing a full refund. Twelve days later it appeared as a credit on my credit card. I am grateful for the refund – but must add that given current circumstances with Covid-19, they really should have made it clear one could receive a refund vs going through the multi step process I have – many will just accept that they only get a voucher for future use. This is not ‘industry standard,’ by the way. The airline, a different travel insurance company for my airfare, and the tour company all gave immediate full refunds. Therefore only 3 stars, and I will likely not use them in the future.

I will never buy travel insurance from this company again. They advertise cancellation for any reason but that is incredibly misleading. Make sure you read the fine print very carefully! I wish I had done a little more research and read reviews prior to purchasing. They have hundreds of negative reviews on BBB.org.

Beware of this scammer insurance company! We purchased this insurance as a recommendation from our travel agent since our dream trip was going to cost thousands of dollars. This was Under the circumstances we could cancel for any reason. We figured it would be worth it since this was such a major expense to our military family. It was our family Christmas trip we had saved up for three years! Imagine a Christmas in Europe! … oh the excitement we had on our way to the airport just days before Christmas. When we arrived at the airport ticket counter, we were informed that new restrictions kept us from traveling out of the United States into Italy because our daughter’s passport were to expire within 6 months of our travel. We were only going to be gone for two weeks but the passport were set to expire within 5 1/2 months from the time we return… delta airlines would not allow us to board. My family was devastated. Needless to say COVID-19/a pandemic happened while we were awaiting our claim. Fast forward nine months and this company is finally reaching out to us only to tell us that they’re not going to refund our money. $7000 in airfare was ripped away from us. Stolen as far as we are concerned! Again, AIG is a complete scam company! We are beyond devastated and hopeless… who can you trust these days? Not this company!

Guitar Zealot

When it comes to claiming refunds on travel insurance, they have a policy to refund if the cancellation request is made within 15 days of planned travel, however if sent a request for refund, they reply back pretty late, even after the 15 day period ends and will decline your request since the 15 day period has passed. Highly unprofessional and unethical. Would suggest staying away.

This appears to be a sham company, they lost my claim package even after signing for it at the post office, 4 week delay just to start to look at it….. All I ever get is the call center with very polite people, but no action…… its be 32 days since they received the paperwork. Can not even update their own website,

Timothy Groman

If you are in need of travel insurance I encourage you to look elsewhere. Please know that I filed my claim with AIG when I was unable to travel to Africa because of an inconclusive Covid-19 test result. 24 hours after the airline sent links to request a full airfare refund, I promptly used the airline’s link to request my refund and it was received about 48 hours later.

About a week later I received an email from AIG indicating that my claim was denied, not because I had already received my refund but because my reason for asking for a reason didn’t meet their criteria. How ironic that the airline found the reason valid, Aig didn’t even investigate just instantly denied the claim. Pathetic treatment of claims in a pandemic, unless you are sick with Covid or something else you’re basically screwed. Beware of their tactics to do nothing to help you! They stole my money and did nothing!! JUST SHARING!!
