Funeral insurance is, after automobile insurance, the insurance product with the greatest capillarity in Spain, . Not in vain, 21.5 million people of the 46.5 million residents in the country are protected by one of these policies, according to data collected by ICEA. They represent 46.3% of the population. It is an insurance that has a marked family character: although there are 21.5 million people insured, the number of contracts amounts to 8.2 million. In other words, each policy protects 2 or 3 people in the family nucleus.

Who takes out funeral insurance?

The implementation of funeral insurance is particularly noteworthy in the southern half of the Peninsula and on the Cantabrian coast. The provinces where this product has a greater presence are Cádiz (86% of the insured population), Ávila (84%), Badajoz (78%), Ciudad Real (73%) and Huelva (72%).

But even in those territories where death insurance has a comparatively low weight, its presence is still more than perceptible. This is the case of Soria (19%), Huesca (22%), Teruel (23%) and the Balearic Islands (24%).

The highest contracting rates for death insurance occur after 45 years of age and, very especially, in old age. However, burial insurance is also quite present among children and young people. Insurance rates in the population under 30 years of age range between 27% and 44%.

Evolution of funeral insurance

The death of a loved one is one of the hardest blows that the human being suffers. This loss also entails a series of added disorders in the worst moment of life: it is necessary to face the cost of the funeral, as well as the steps to organize it. Unfortunately, the bureaucracy does not understand goodbyes, nor difficult emotional moments. Hence, insurers have included in their policies services that are in charge not only of the bureaucratic process but of all the accompaniment to the family of the deceased in such a delicate moment. There are policies such as RGA Family Assistance that include legal advice and psychological support for the family so that they can experience their grief with peace of mind.

Hence, many people choose to take out funeral insurance so that their family can not worry about the paperwork and the expenses associated with the burial when they receive this setback.
